The Union Cabinet has finally given the approval to the National Education Policy after 1 year of drafting. The new Education Policy will be implemented from the 2021 session pan India. The Union government has changed the National Education Policy after 34 years in India. New Education Policy 2020

On 29th July 2020, India witnessed a change in the National Education Policy after 34 years. The policy was changed after the year 1966. The Union Minister of HRD Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is the major architect of this National Education Policy. Mrs Smriti Irani and Mr Praksh Javdekar were the two major players who supported him in this endeavour. The HRD Ministry has announced a lot of changes in the education sector with this new NEP. Renewing old Education Policy and making a fresh boost to the Education sector is the major motto of this National Education Policy.

Major Highlights of National Education Policy

There are a lot of changes which are introduced in the new National Education Policy, the major key highlights of the NEP is as follows:

School Level

  • The new policy has scrapped the 10+2 policy. The New NEP will work on the model of  5+3+3+4.
  • The rules will extend the Right to Education Act 2009. This will help to assure the availability of free and quality education for all 3–6-year-olds.
  • All of the Grade 1 students will undergo a three-month-long school preparation module.
  • The rules will ensure the pupil-teacher ratio under 30:1 at the level of each school
  • The new rules ensure 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio in pre-school through secondary school by 2030.
  • The new strategy extends the Right to Education Act. This will help to assure the availability of free and education from pre-school through Grade 12.
  • All the teachings and learnings will be in the local language/mother-tongue at least till Grade 5.
  • The draft also stresses to use the local language until Grade 8, with a flexible language approach.
  • The ministry has asked new ideas from people and it will revise the National Curriculum Framework by end-2020.
  • The policy also aims to launch new textbooks for all the classes. The committee will develop new textbooks in local languages for all the students and the class.
  • The new set of rules says that the translated copies of the books will be also available at a feasible rate.
  • The strategy will also provide high-quality textbooks in local languages. The ministry has asked to develop special materials and books for students with disability.
  • The new rules now aim at creating new National Assessment Centre. This centre has been named PAREKH. It will work as a standard-setting body for the education sector pan India.

NEP Policy for College

Part 1

  • The Centre will set up ten Indian Institutes of Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities.
  • The rules ensure to set up all these institutions on the model and standards of the IIT
  • It has stressed that from the year 2022, the UG degree will be now of 3 or 4 years duration.
  • The Institutions may offer multiple exit options within this period to the students. They will also offer it with the appropriate certification.
  • The new rules say that now the students will be given an advanced diploma in discipline after completing 2 years of study, It will also award the certificate to any students who quit the course only after 1 year.
  • The 4-year programme will provide students with the opportunity to experience the full range of liberal education.
  • This programme will be called the Bachelor of Liberal Arts in the chosen majors and minors.
  • The 3-year Bachelor’s programme will lead to a Bachelors’ degree. Choosing any of the programmes may award the student with a degree ‘with honours.
  • The students who wish to pursue higher education after UG degree will have to enrol in the 4-year course.

Part 2

  • The new NEP has changed the rules to pursue a PhD in any subject. The student shall now require to have either a Master’s degree or a 4-year UG degree with honours.
  • The new rules announced discontinuing of the M.Phil.course from the year 2021 onwards. This means that now now now M.phil direct admission in PhD.
  • The policy will revise the Choice Based Credit System from time to time. It will also make changes and improvement to allow for flexibility and innovation.
  • The Academic, financial and emotional support will be available for students to help them attain better outcomes.
  • The policy says that it will expand the Open and distance learning for all the courses. This will help in thus increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio to 50%.
  • The useful measures will be available such as online digital repository, funding for research. Also, it will ensure improved student services, credit-based recognition of MOOCs.
  • The National Higher Education Regulatory Authority will be the only regulator for all higher education in India.
  • The policy will now transform all the current regulatory bodies into Professional Standard-Setting Bodies.
