IIT Hyderabad Launches 3 New Industry-Oriented Courses


The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) has decided to offer three new industry-oriented B. Tech programs. The courses offered are in three streams — Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Computational Engineering, Industrial Chemistry. It will be effective from the academic year 2021-22.

The curriculum of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

These new 4-year courses will equip students to work in industries like pharma and drug design, petrochemical, environment, and energy. Professor Anindya Roy of IIT-H has said, “Curriculum for B Tech in biotechnology and bioinformatics is designed to train the students with in-demand bioinformatics skills, including artificial intelligence and soft computing, web technologies, structural biology, biological data mining, image processing, modeling, and simulation, systems biology and biostatistics to ensure complete industry readiness of the students.”

Alongside the curriculum of these courses, students will also have an option for choosing electives of other subjects. For instance, students can choose electives in their interest areas like computer science or entrepreneurship. They will be required to complete 12 additional credits in the elective course.

The curriculum of Computational Engineering

Prof Raja Banerjee, who is the head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering says that “Students of B Tech computational engineering will receive an interdisciplinary education where they will gain expertise in numerical methods and algorithms, modeling and simulations in engineering systems and processes, high-performance computing, process control, and optimization, data analytics, as well as machine learning.”

The curriculum of Industrial Chemistry

The head of the department of chemistry at IIT-H, Prof Satyanarayana G shared his views on the industrial chemistry course. He said, “BTech in industrial chemistry will have a particular emphasis on producing the finest graduate students with adequate knowledge of applied chemistry and technology to work in various industries like pharma and drug design, polymer industry, petrochemical industries, environment, and energy, etc. ”

Courses with Hands-On Experience

In the 6th semester of these courses, students have a choice to opt for semester-long projects. These projects will provide them the opportunity to gain experience and work in various fields. Students can opt to work in biotech, pharma, manufacturing, IT, data analysis, and chemical informatics. It will assist them in the gradual transition into full-time jobs after their graduation.
